it a terrorist attack as well. for more, let's go to dan rivers in london. what are the latest reports there on the hostage situation? >> effectively, according to the minister of information in algeria, this is a standoff. the algerian security forces surrounded this gas plant in the far east of algeria. the islamists are holed up inside, holding a number of western hostages. we don't know the exact numbers. there's been a press conference this morning from the norwegian stat oil company. it is saying that it had 17 employees there, 5 escaped. and therefore 12 remain unaccounted for. not clear if all are being held hostage or if some escaped into the desert. it's a confused situation. the state department confirmed there are americans among those being held. we understand as well possibly british, japanese, french as well as those norwegians. a number of countries being embroiled in this hostage crisis which looks like it may have been precipitated by algeria's decision to allow french planes to fly of the country as part of its ongoing military campaign in mali to the south. >> i kno

matter when americans are taken hostage along with others. >> cnn's dan rivers is in london. dan, there are so many different stories going around that the compound was attacked by the algerian military, that some of the hostages escaped, including one american. what are you hearing? >> well, i'm afraid it is a very confusing picture. the latest line we have from the british foreign office here in london confirming that the algerians have told them that there is an ongoing operation at this gas field suggesting that perhaps some sort of effort to go in. we know from the ministry of information in algeria they surrounded the terrorists with the hostages at the gas field, the troops were there. this sounds like they have gone in. there were widespread reports that helicopters were being used to attack the terrorist positions. now, the algerian foreign minister is clear on that saying the use of helicopters is wrong, it's a fantasy was their quote on that. in terms of the number of people that are being held hostage, we don't really have a clear idea, i'm afraid. the initial reports

the battery fire risk. europe, japan and india making similar moves to keep the new jetliner from flying. dan springer is live in seattle. dan. >> reporter: yeah, jon the grounding is a major blow to boeing and the airlines that have sung billions of dollars into this plane of the future. airlines around the world are scrambling to bring in jets to replace the 787s that are not allowed to fly right now. that's led to flight delays and cancellations. many passengers have been stranded, their plans in limbo. for the most part they've been saying, better safe than sorry. >> i'd rather have to fly either tomorrow or sake som take some flights tonight by different airplane lines than put in the risk of anything happening, you know. >> reporter: the faa's directive followed an emergency landing of a 787 in japan yesterday. a lithium eye on battery below the cockpit overheated and hot chemicals sprayed out of it. a different battery i cracked open the other day. they have to prove the dream lean iris safe before it can fly again. the battery manufacturer told reporters it could take months just to f

for now. dan springer live in seattle where teams assem being the 787. the fa amp wants proof that batteries are safe before they can fly again is that what we can report? >> that is right, bill. the f.a.a. issued what they call an emergency air worthiness directive to potential fire risk in the 787 and grounding the u.s. airliner fleet grounded six planes all owned by united airline. this is a big change for the f.a.a. just last friday officials said the 787s were completely safe. even as they announced a comprehensive review of the plane's electrical system. even though analysts tell me they don't think the issue in japan today was all that serious in terms of the threat to the aircraft coming down. the feds have seen enough to jump in. all the recent problems the way the plane is powered. the lithium ion batteries are used to provide backup electricity. this directive will mean that united will be scrambling to move flights around -- planes around and flights getting cancelled. >> bill: how big of a problem is this for boeing. >> they may be getting close to a tipping point

in this plane. dan springer is live in seattle. what is the immediate impact of all this, dan? >> reporter: martha, officially it is a crisis for boeing. canceled flights, upset passengers all across the world. within hours of the faa directive to ground all 787s, other countries followed suit. airlines are scrambling to get other aircraft to fill in for the dreamliners. in most case that is not possible. in san jose, two flights to tokyo have been canceled. two are in jeopardy. this nonstop route was opened friday to a lot of fanfare. the faa is grounding the 787 because of quote, a potential battery fire risk. it was triggered by an emergency landing of a 787 in japan due to apparent overheatings of a battery, second time in eight years. business leaders who worked for years getting new flights to asia. they don't fault the airlines. they're upset with boeing. >> this is a company that put passengers ahead of profits and made a wise decision to make sure that boeing works out these kinks before they put another plane up in the air. >> reporter: and 49 dreamliners were in service. united

young men, dan and dave zimmerman. gabe is my transition buddy. he was a friend and we had a place where we put together the office of congressman gifford staff early on. he is a wonderful young man with such compassion and care. it is beyond words to think that he is no longer with us. his mother served for many years people who were disadvantaged in our community. it was gabe who was killed at that event on january 8. he died right beside me after being shot myself. i will never, ever forget the image of gabe dying by my side. i know for certain that his last action was to come and try to help us. to help congresswoman giffords and in doing that, he was shot. some of us here in congress meet regularly in the room that is named in his honor. every time i go to meetings, i remember this young man. his mother has been very active. particularly active since the tragedy in tucson. there was a magazine in a clip that 33 bullets. i know that we need to do something about it, and i know that emily wants to do something as well. we want to welcome emily nottingham to hear her testimony this aft
